All About Erin

What do you like best about what you do?
I LOVE creative problem solving, trying to find efficient and effective solutions to fit a client’s needs, along with special moments in a space that help articulate their unique qualities, personality and culture. This requires getting to know our clients and spending time with them.  I also love project management – holding all of the individual components and systems of a project in my mind and weaving them together to create a functional whole aligned with the big picture we initially defined with our clients.

Why did you start Cult Creative?
Working in the commercial world, we felt disconnected from the people most impacted by our projects.  Our clients were committees and large entities making decisions largely driven by time and money. We saw an opportunity to be more intimately acquainted with our clients and and their interpersonal relationships, and, while decisions are still driven by time and money, recognize the factors impacting them the most in order to create a final product that bends to the whims of the people living in these spaces every day and achieves the goals they have for what will make them feel more free in their space.

What is your design style?
I have a somewhat eclectic style. I gravitate toward natural materials and clean lines, much like Scandinavian modern design, but I love to blend different textures and patterns together in a way that feels varied and warm. I like spaces that feel interesting and different and lived-in.  And I LOVE color – bold, saturated, emotive. Every space has a mood, and color should make you feel something.

Where do you get your design inspiration?
Usually from being an observer of the spaces and objects around me! I love seeing unique materials and textures.  I love finding unusual uses for everyday things or discovering a creative use of space somewhere.  I see something that calls me to pay attention to my surroundings, and it gives me ideas for how to take that idea and make it my own.

Why did you become an architect + designer?
I enjoy being creative, and getting to use my creativity to help other people with practical needs was the real motivation behind why I decided to become an architect. I started out in interior design as somewhat of a whim – it just sounded fun and interesting. To my surprise, I really enjoyed it and found I had some skill at it. I decided to become an architect because I felt like it positioned me for even greater impact on the practical needs of people.

What are your hobbies outside of work?
I love doing anything with my family.  Friday night movie and homemade pizza.  Saturday morning crepes and jammies.  I love eating good food and having good conversations with friends.  I love traveling and exploring cities, finding the unique things that define a place and culture.  I love hiking and reading and doing puzzles.  I love trying new things.
